Panasonic Viera TH50PZ85U / TH46PZ85U / TH50PZ85U Review

Panasonic's new 85U Plasma Series has made quite a splash due to its
ability to display extremely dark blacks despite being a cheaper
model, along with generally excellent displays of all other colors as
well. It comes in 50 inches (Panasonic TH50PZ85U), 46 inches
(Panasonic TH46PZ85U), and 42 (Panasonic TH50PZ85U) inches.

The design of the set itself is extremely sleek and stylish. To be
fair, it pretty much looks exactly like every other plasma display,
but this isn't really a bad thing. There is simply nothing more
stylish than plain black, and its especially fitting for this model
due to its reputation with the color.

Panasonic has gone to extremes in order to make the 85U series a
viable competitor in the high-definition field. It has a 30,000 to 1
contrast ratio, which is what makes its extremely dark spectrum range
possible.

Features include an anti-reflective screen, which does its job
extremely well. Viewing is a pleasure even in bright sunlight, and
houselights do not cause any issue as well. It has three HDMI ports,
which is more than enough to suit my needs.

Unfortunately, the 85U Plasma Series still has its fair share of
problems. The Pioneer Kuro is still capable of displaying even darker
blacks. Shadow quality and details are not nearly as good as the
display of black, as they appear too brilliant and lit up. The 85U's
especially have trouble with the color red. There is also a lack of
picture control.

Power use is extremely high for a set of its size, and this is
extremely important to take into consideration for many consumers.
Its noise reduction is lacking, which can cause quite a disturbance
for many high-definition enthusiasts. Definition scaling can also use
some improvement, and hopefully Panasonic addresses these issues in
its future models.
