Panasonic Viera TH50PX80U / TH42PX80U/ TH37PX80U Review
The Panasonic TH50PX80U tries to bring more to the table than previous models from this company. The 50-inch model is the most impressive, though it is also available in 42 inches (Panasonic TH42PX80U) and 37 inches (Panasonic TH37PX80U). An anti-reflective screen and vivid blacks are unfortunately unable to makeup for the many problems plaguing this model.
The colors displayed by the TH50PX80U must be addressed before any of its problems are discussed. The ability of this line to display vivid hues of all colors, and extremely bright whites as well, is something to be admired. The whites are something that are especially noteworthy, as they are perhaps the best in any plasma set released within this generation.
Unfortunately, the anti-reflective sheet that is highly touted as an important feature of the Panasonic TH50PX80U is not very impressive. The sheet serves as a filter that is meant to minimize issues such as glare and image doubling. Unfortunately, it is not possible to remove the protective sheet of glass without damaging the trim (which is not easily removed), and one is left to suffer with the protective sheet in place. The result is occasional doubling of the display picture, which can be a great nuisance for people viewing the set from an angle.
Picture quality is good, but not as good as other products in the same price range. It has significantly high noise levels for such an expensive model line. This is not to say that it looks poor – it simply could be better for costing so much money.
When viewed side-by-side with other high-end models, the Panasonic TH50PX80U does not really seem like something special. I would have to recommend that consumers look into Panasonic's lower end models, as they are more likely to receive more for their money.
